This is an original, 16 page, Irish Republican newspaper. The publication was banned after two printings. The paper is titled “AR n-EIRE New ireland” and is Number.22 of the fourth volume.
It is dated October 6th 1917, one year on from the Easter Rising which saw the Irish Volunteers lead an insurrection against English rule.
The bulk of the pamphlet concerns the death of Thomas Ashe in 1917 from force feeding during his hunger strike in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin. Ashe was a battalion commander in the Irish Volunteers and member of the Irish Republic Brotherhood whose death fuelled the Irish independence movement.
The paper also talks about the importance of the Russian Revolution to Irish republicans and includes many contemporary advertisements.
This piece gives insight into the thoughts and feelings of Irish Republicans as well as life at the time and is a perfect piece for anyone interested in the period.
