Description

*Austria, Cold War c.1980s, Steyr AUG A1 5.56mm Assault Rifle – Early Pattern, EU Deactivated*

Serial number: ZM24848. 80cm long. 22" Barrel

An original early-pattern Steyr AUG assault rifle, chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO, presented here in correct A1 configuration with fixed carry handle and integrated optic housing. This example retains its original translucent Steyr polymer magazine, vertical foregrip, and early pattern furniture.

The rifle is correctly marked “JME AUG MADE IN MALAYSIA” to the polymer stock, a factory-original feature. During Steyr production, polymer components were injection-moulded in Malaysia by Joint Manufacturing Enterprise (Steyr’s Malaysian industrial partner) and returned to Austria for final assembly. All steel and critical components remain Austrian manufacture, as expected for Steyr AUG rifles of this period.

The rifle has been professionally deactivated to current EU specification and is accompanied by its original Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House EU Deactivation Certificate.

Historical Note:
Designed in 1977, the Steyr AUG (Armee-Universal-Gewehr) was a highly futuristic assault rifle for its time, employing a compact bullpup configuration and extensive use of polymer and aluminium components. Chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge, the AUG combined full-length ballistic performance with a significantly reduced overall length, making it highly effective in both conventional and mechanised infantry roles.

Early A1-pattern rifles, such as this example, are characterised by their green/brown polymer stocks with integral pistol grip, folding vertical foregrip, and distinctive translucent 30-round Steyr magazines. A defining feature is the integral Swarovski 1.5× telescopic sight, housed within the fixed carry handle and supplemented by backup iron sights, reflecting Steyr’s forward-thinking approach to infantry optics decades ahead of widespread adoption elsewhere.

Fire control on original service rifles utilised a progressive trigger system, whereby trigger pressure determined semi-automatic or fully automatic fire, eliminating the need for a separate selector lever. This innovative but controversial system further underscored the AUG’s unconventional design philosophy.

The AUG was officially adopted by the Austrian Bundesheer in 1977 and subsequently exported worldwide, becoming one of the most recognisable Cold War–era assault rifles. Early fixed-handle A1 variants are now particularly sought after, representing the rifle in its original and most iconic configuration prior to later modular rail developments.

*Condition*
Overall very good service-used condition. The polymer stock shows light handling marks and surface wear consistent with age, with clear and legible moulded markings. Metal components retain their original finish with honest wear, flaking, and edge loss visible to the carry handle, barrel assembly, and receiver areas, entirely consistent with military service use. Markings, including Steyr logos, calibre designations, serial number ZM24848, and proof marks, remain clear. The integrated optic lens shows expected age-related wear but remains intact. The rifle is complete with correct Steyr translucent magazine. Deactivation has been carried out cleanly and professionally, with EU and Birmingham Proof House marks present. Certificate is included and matches the serial number. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

EU Deactivation Standard: Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/337. Proof House: Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House. Certificate Number: 172564. Date of Certification: 21/09/2022. Deactivating Authority: D & B Militaria.
