Description

*Belgian, c. 1845–1865, Double-Barrel Percussion Sporting Shotgun, 12–14 Bore (Approx.), Liège Proofed, Deactivated*

An antique side-by-side double-barrel percussion sporting shotgun of mid-19th century continental manufacture, retaining its original walnut stock, iron furniture, and back-action lock configuration.

The piece is fitted with twin external hammers, double triggers, and a long game-gun length barrel set measuring approximately 76.5 cm. The barrels are numbered 5665, the same assembly number appearing internally, confirming period fitting of the components. The action closes correctly and presents as a typical working-grade sporting arm of the era.

The gun bears Liège proof and inspection markings including the Perron view mark and additional star-over-letter controller marks, confirming Belgian manufacture within the established Liège proof system.

The barrels are now blocked and the piece is presented as deactivated with the Birmingham deactivation symbol clearly present on the LHS of the barrel; (crossed words over DA over 90);  suitable for display, study, or collection.

Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 76.5 cm. Overall length: 119 cm.

Historical Note:
During the mid-19th century the Liège region of Belgium was one of Europe’s largest centres for the manufacture of sporting firearms, producing vast numbers of percussion shotguns for both domestic use and export. These guns ranged from plain utility pieces intended for farmers, gamekeepers, and general sporting use, through to higher-grade engraved examples retailed across Britain and the continent.

Back-action lock double-barrel percussion shotguns such as this represent the final generation of traditional muzzle-loading sporting arms immediately prior to the widespread adoption of pinfire and later breech-loading cartridge systems in the 1860s. Many remained in rural service well into the late 19th century before being retired or rendered inert for decorative display.

The presence of Liège proof and controller marks, including the Perron, reflects the structured inspection regime used by the Belgian proof house to regulate barrel quality and safety during the black-powder era.

*Condition*
Overall a well-preserved and honest antique example showing expected age, handling wear, and surface patination to the metalwork. The walnut stock displays marks, dents, and finish wear consistent with long service use. The action cocks and release, and the gun closes correctly. The barrels are blocked and the piece is presented as deactivated for display purposes. No maker or retailer name is visible. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Mid-19th century Liège-proofed double-barrel percussion sporting shotgun, now deactivated and ideal for display.
