Description

*British, 1812 Pattern Officer’s Universal Shako Plate (Framed Presentation)*

A fine early nineteenth-century British officer’s Universal Shako front plate, introduced under the 1812 pattern changes and worn by line infantry officers during the later Napoleonic War period. Executed in gilt brass, the plate displays the crowned royal cypher GR in elegant intertwined script beneath a finely detailed King’s Crown. The plate measures approximately 8 cm x 12.5 cm. The 1812 pattern plates were in use for only a short span, roughly 1812–1816, which makes surviving officer-grade examples increasingly scarce.

This example shows the characteristic shallow doming and asymmetric cartouche outline expected of privately purchased officer fittings. The gilt finish has mellowed from many decades of polishing, with the high points of the crown and cypher smoothly worn and the original pebbled ground behind the cypher now largely polished down. The visible rear fixings appear to be later threaded retainers used for framing; the original soldered mounting lugs are likely concealed beneath the backing board but cannot be inspected without opening the frame.

Now mounted for display in a later frame measuring 21.6 cm x 26.7 cm, set against a deep blue backing board.

Historical Note:
The 1812 pattern Universal Shako represented the first true standardisation of British infantry headgear during the Napoleonic Wars. Officers purchased their plates privately, resulting in subtle variations in gilt quality and cypher engraving, though the crowned GR remained the defining insignia until the accession of William IV in 1830.

*Condition*
The gilt brass plate remains in good condition, showing softening and gentle smoothing from period and later polishing. No cracks, splits, or repairs observed. Crisp definition still visible to the crown. Frame with age marks and surface wear but structurally sound. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
