Description

*British, 1991, Brass Artillery Cartridge Case by Royal Arsenal (R↑L)*

An original British brass artillery cartridge case, dated 1991 and produced at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich (R↑L), offered as a completely inert display piece. A solid late Cold War example with clear base markings and classic heavy brass construction—ideal for collectors, display, or conversion.

Approx. Measurements – Height: 30.9 cm. Base diameter: 7.5 cm.

This is a British military cartridge case manufactured at the historic Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, as denoted by the “R↑L” (Royal Laboratory) marking beneath the War Department broad arrow. The date “91” confirms production in 1991, placing it in the late Cold War / immediate post-Cold War period, when traditional brass cases were still in use alongside newer materials.

The square stamp beneath the date is a typical inspection or acceptance mark, consistent with British ordnance quality control practices. The central primer is present and appears struck/spent, further supporting its inert, fired status.

Based on proportions (30.9 cm height and 7.5 cm base), this case aligns with a small-calibre QF (quick-firing) gun system, likely in the 37–40mm class, used across British service in training, light anti-aircraft, or naval auxiliary roles during the late 20th century. These cases are less commonly encountered than the larger 76mm+ examples and make for more practical display pieces.

History Note:
The Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, was one of Britain’s most important ordnance manufacturing sites, operating from the 17th century through to the late 20th century. The “R↑L” mark specifically denotes the Royal Laboratory, responsible for ammunition production and filling.

By 1991, British forces were transitioning through the final phase of the Cold War, with ongoing commitments in Europe and the Gulf. Ammunition from this period represents the last era of traditional British military-industrial production before widespread restructuring and privatisation of ordnance manufacture.

*Condition*
Good overall display condition with honest service wear. The brass shows age-related patina, staining, and surface marks consistent with handling and use. Importantly, there are two vertical stress splits at the neck, a common feature in fired brass cases due to expansion and contraction during discharge. These do not detract from its display appeal but should be noted. The base markings remain clear and legible. Primer present and appears spent. Structurally stable for display. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
