*British, 2002, Manchester Commonwealth Games “Friend of Manchester” Enamel Supporter’s Pin Badge on Original Card*
An original enamel pin badge issued in connection with the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, retaining its original retail display card marked “Official Licensed Product.”
The badge features a gilt-metal frame with blue enamel centre panel reading “Manchester 2002.” At either end are stylised human figures with raised arms, echoing the distinctive graphic identity used for the Games. The design reflects the event’s theme of participation and unity, with the figures symbolising celebration and friendship among competing nations.
The badge remains mounted on its original printed card backing, which carries the official Manchester 2002 logo showing three stylised figures forming the letter “M.” The reverse retains its original butterfly clutch fastening.
Badges of this type were produced as officially licensed souvenirs and supporter items during the build-up to and staging of the Games, and examples surviving with their original packaging are less commonly encountered.
Approx. Measurements – Badge length: 2.2 cm. Height: 1.1 cm.
History Note:
The 2002 Commonwealth Games, officially the XVII Commonwealth Games, were held in Manchester from 25 July to 4 August 2002. The event represented one of the largest sporting competitions ever hosted in the United Kingdom and was widely credited with accelerating Manchester’s regeneration following decades of industrial decline.
Seventy-two nations and territories took part in the Games. Venues constructed or upgraded for the event included the City of Manchester Stadium (now the Etihad Stadium), the Manchester Aquatics Centre, and the National Cycling Centre. The Games were notable for fully integrating elite parasport events into the main programme, with medals counting towards the overall national tallies.
A wide range of licensed memorabilia—including badges, pins, mascots, and clothing—was produced for supporters, volunteers, and visitors. Items such as this “Manchester 2002” badge served both as souvenirs and as symbols of civic pride during the event.
*Condition*
The badge appears in very good condition, retaining its bright gilt finish and intact blue enamel with only minimal signs of handling.
