Description

*British, 57 mm (6-Pounder) Blank Cartridge Case – L1A1 / L22A1 Marked, Dated 2006–2008*

An original British 57 mm (6-pounder) brass cartridge case, produced for blank firing and clearly marked to both the body and base. The case measures 24.8 cm tall with a 6.5 cm base diameter, consistent with standard QF 6-pounder dimensions. This example retains crisp stencilled body markings and a clearly marked base, making it an attractive display piece for artillery, ordnance and post-war British military collections.

Body markings: “BLANK L1-A1”, “11OZ G12”, and “NE 11/06 572”.
Base markings: “No 20 L22-A1” and “A05 NE/07/08”.

Historical Note:
The 57 mm 6-pounder is best known as a key British artillery and anti-tank calibre of the Second World War, serving extensively from 1942 onward. Long after the gun was obsolete for frontline combat, preserved 6-pounders continued in training, instructional, and ceremonial roles, particularly for historic gun displays, drill, and saluting use.

This case is a useful illustration of that later service life. The body carries a BLANK L1A1 marking (an earlier blank pattern designation), while the base is marked L22A1, a later pattern designation associated with continued British service and controlled ammunition supply/acceptance. The date codes 11/06 and 07/08 place the piece firmly in the modern post-war period, when blank cartridges were still being manufactured and inspected for official use with preserved guns and ceremonial units.

*Condition*
The cartridge case is in good overall condition, showing honest service wear and age-related patina throughout. There are surface scratches, handling marks, and areas of oxidation/verdigris, particularly around the rim and interior edge. No splits, cracks, or structural damage are noted, and the case remains solid and displayable. Markings to both body and base remain legible. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
