Description

*British, c.1876, Martini-Henry Pattern 1876 Socket Bayonet, Unit Marked*

A British Martini-Henry Pattern 1876 socket bayonet, of regulation triangular spike form, intended for use with the Martini-Henry service rifle. The bayonet has the correct long spike blade with angled neck and cylindrical socket fitted with rotating locking ring and screw hinge. The socket mortise is of the correct Martini pattern and the overall construction matches regulation P1876 examples.

The blade retains a good even aged patina, originally bright finish now toned through age, with no sign of later polishing or modern alteration. The socket shows a stamped number 6 or 9, likely a rack, unit, or store marking. No War Department or maker’s marks are visible, which is encountered on colonial issue, contractor-produced.

The bayonet remains a good honest example of the Pattern 1876, with correct form, dimensions, and fittings throughout.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 40.8 cm. Overall length: 49.2 cm.

History Note:
The Pattern 1876 socket bayonet was introduced for the Martini-Henry rifle and saw widespread service throughout the late Victorian period, including use in colonial campaigns across Africa, India, and the Middle East. Unlike earlier Enfield socket bayonets, the P1876 incorporated a stronger locking ring and revised mortise to suit the Martini rifle’s bayonet bar. Many examples remained in service for decades and are frequently encountered with unit numbers or rack markings rather than full War Department inspection stamps, particularly on colonial or reserve issue weapons.

*Condition*
Good overall condition with age-related wear and surface patina throughout. Blade straight with no bends. Socket and locking ring functioning correctly. Markings limited to stamped numbers on socket. No visible War Department stamps. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
