*British, Early to Mid-20th Century, Leather Sam Browne Waist Belt Named to Captain G.N. Rawson, R.E.*

A brown leather military Sam Browne-style waist belt retaining its original brass double-claw buckle, suspension rings, and central equipment hook. The belt is constructed from heavy brown leather with stitched reinforcing panels and fitted with two brass D-rings for the attachment of sword hangers, binocular cases, map cases, or other field equipment. A single brass hook remains fitted to the front section.

The interior is stamped “37” and additionally ink-named “Capt. G.N. Rawson, R.E.” (indistinct), likely identifying a British Army officer of the Royal Engineers. The overall style and fittings are consistent with British officer’s service equipment of the early to mid-20th century, particularly private-purchase Sam Browne field equipment widely used during both World Wars and the interwar period.

Approx. Measurements – Length: 118 cm. Width: 5.5 cm.

History Note:
The Sam Browne belt was introduced into British military service during the late 19th century and became standard officer field equipment throughout the British Empire. Originally designed for carrying swords and sidearms, the broad leather waist belt with attached fittings evolved into a practical service item used by officers across numerous branches including the Royal Engineers. Named examples to identified officers are increasingly desirable to collectors, particularly where unit attribution survives.

*Condition*
The belt displays honest period wear and age-related patina throughout the leather and brass fittings. Surface cracking, scuffing, and areas of dryness are present to the leather together with old stress marks and additional adjustment holes from service use. One area near the buckle shows tearing and wear around the adjustment holes. Brass fittings retain a mellow aged tone. Ink naming and size markings remain visible though partially faded. A solid untouched example with good original character. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
