*British, George Vth, 1901 Pattern Royal Navy Officer’s Dress Dirk & Scabbard by Henry Wilkinson – retailed by Gieves Ltd*
An original 1901 Pattern Royal Navy Officer’s Dress Dirk, dating to the reign of King George V, complete with its original leather and gilt mounted scabbard. The dirk retains the classic gilt brass lion-head pommel with suspension ring, ribbed white fish-skin grip bound with twisted copper wire, and regulation straight crossguard with acorn finials. The central cartouche displays the crowned fouled anchor within a laurel wreath, the standard Royal Navy officer emblem.
The straight, double-edged blade is finely etched with traditional naval motifs including crowned anchors, royal cyphers, foliate panels and the Royal Arms. One ricasso panel is marked “Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London”, while the reverse carries the retailer’s mark “Gieves Ltd, London, Portsmouth & Devonport”, reflecting purchase through one of the leading naval outfitters of the period.
The original black leather scabbard retains its gilt brass throat and chape with engraved scrolling decoration, twin suspension rings, and functioning locking catch. Stamped assembly numbers to the throat (35 and 8) are present as noted.

Historical Note:
The 1901 Pattern dress dirk served as the standard ceremonial sidearm of Royal Navy officers throughout the early twentieth century. Worn with full dress uniform rather than in combat, these dirks were typically privately purchased to regulation specification from prestigious makers such as Henry Wilkinson, often supplied through naval tailors and outfitters including Gieves, whose branches at Portsmouth and Devonport catered directly to serving officers.
The Royal Navy officer’s dirk traces its origins to the 1856 Pattern, but the form seen here represents the later 1879–1901 development, commonly referred to by collectors as the 1901 Pattern. This evolution introduced several defining features, including a lengthened blade (typically approx. 45–47 cm, increased from the earlier 30–33 cm) to improve ceremonial appearance, the standardisation of the crowned fouled-anchor cartouche to the hilt, and the adoption of a spring-clip locking mechanism at the scabbard throat. During the late 19th century, acid etched steel decoration like this also replaced the earlier blued-and-gilt style, creating the familiar appearance associated with Royal Navy dirks of the Edwardian and early 20th-century period.
The crowned “GRV” royal cypher etched on the blade confirms production within the reign of King George V (1910–1936), placing this example within the classic pre-WWII period of Royal Navy ceremonial dress.
*Condition*
A good, honest example showing clear age and service wear. The etched blade remains crisp with strong maker and retailer panels; surface staining, age spotting and areas of light greying to the polish are visible but decoration remains clear. Gilt hilt fittings are complete with pleasing patina and some rubbing to high points. The fish-skin grip remains intact with original wire binding, showing slight age shrinkage and minor wear. The lion-head pommel retains good definition with natural wear and small areas of finish loss consistent with handling. Scabbard leather shows clear age-related cracking, surface crazing and some lifting with areas of exposed underlayer; brass mounts are secure with clear engraved decoration and working catch mechanism.
