Description

*British, (Imperial German Made) c.1856, Pattern 1856 Yataghan Sword Bayonet, Made under Solingen Contract, Numbered*

A classic example of the British Pattern 1856 yataghan sword bayonet, designed for use with the 2-band Enfield short rifles. This model is distinctive for its long, curved "yataghan" blade profile — a shape inspired by Ottoman swords, providing extended reach and slashing capability in close combat. The bayonet features a fullered blade, swept crossguard with muzzle ring, and bird's head pommel with working press catch.

The blade is marked with inspection stamps "S 4" and "S 8," suggesting Solingen contractor manufacture for British service. The crossguard is numbered "107," while the pommel is serial numbered "747," indicating regimental or rack assignment. The grips are chequered leather, secured with iron rivets, and remain intact despite age.

Approximate Measurements: Blade length: 58 cm. Overall length: 71.2 cm

*Condition*
In fair, as-found condition with heavy patina and surface pitting throughout. The blade edge shows wear but no major chips or cracks. Leather grips are complete but aged and showing some cracking. The press stud mechanism remains intact but may require cleaning to ensure smooth function. Missing its original scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
