An original British Enfield No.2 Mk I service revolver manufactured by the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, in 1932, the very first year of production for Britain's new .38 calibre military service revolver.

This desirable early-production example retains the original Mk I configuration with its exposed hammer and both single- and double-action operation, a feature removed from the majority of service revolvers during later wartime conversion to Mk I* specification.

The barrel rib is clearly stamped "CAL. .38", confirming the revolver's chambering for the British .38/200 (.38 S&W) service cartridge, together with the 1932 barrel date denoting first-year production. The underside of both the barrel and frame carry the matching factory serial number A5017, while the cylinder is numbered 1124, this being the number also recorded on the accompanying UK Deactivation Certificate. Although softened by honest service wear, the right-hand side of the frame retains the remains of the Enfield Crown and model designation, while numerous Enfield "ED" inspection stamps, British Broad Arrow military ownership marks, and individual inspector's marks remain visible throughout the frame, barrel, cylinder and action, confirming its British military acceptance and service.

Unlike most surviving examples, this revolver remains an excellent handling display piece. It cocks correctly in both single and double action, dry-fires, the trigger rotates the cylinder correctly and the revolver retains its original top-break opening mechanism.

History Note:
The Enfield No.2 Mk I was officially adopted by the British Army in 1932 to replace the ageing .455 calibre Webley revolvers. Chambered for the new .38/200 cartridge, it offered reduced recoil, lighter weight and improved practical accuracy while remaining robust enough for military service throughout the British Empire.

Early production revolvers, such as this example, were manufactured with an exposed hammer allowing both single- and double-action fire. Operational experience during the 1930s and early years of the Second World War led the British Army to conclude that single-action fire was unnecessary for combat use. Consequently, most Mk I revolvers were converted during wartime to the simplified Mk I* specification by removing the hammer spur and disabling single-action operation.

Because of these conversions, surviving original Mk I revolvers retaining their exposed hammer are considerably less common than later Mk I* examples and remain particularly sought after by collectors of British military firearms.

The matching A5017 serial number beneath the frame and barrel, together with the barrel date of 1932, identifies this as one of the earliest production runs manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield during the revolver's inaugural year of service.

*Condition*
Presented in very good original military condition with honest service wear throughout. The original factory finish has developed an attractive even military patina, with expected thinning and light handling wear to the edges and high points consistent with long military service. The original chequered hard rubber grip panels remain in good condition, displaying expected age-related wear but no major damage, while the original military lanyard ring remains fitted.

Mechanically, the revolver remains an excellent handling display piece. The hammer cocks correctly in both single and double action and releases cleanly on the trigger. The revolver dry-fires correctly, the cylinder rotates and indexes during operation, and the top-break action opens correctly with the automatic extractor rising as intended. All principal military markings remain visible and legible. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition report.

Deactivation Details:
UK deactivated and accompanied by its original London Proof House Deactivation Certificate, Certificate No. 1107, dated 2 February 2026. The certificate records the revolver as an Enfield No.2 Mk I, calibre .38, with a 5-inch barrel, country of origin UK, and serial number 1124. The revolver retains desirable handling characteristics including a functioning top-break action, rotating cylinder, cocking hammer and dry-firing mechanism, making it a particularly attractive display example when compared with many more heavily restricted deactivations.
