Description

*British, Korean War Era, Royal Navy HMS Theseus Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel & Gilt*

A fine Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Theseus, measuring 4.8 cm x 2.6 cm. The brooch is produced in gilt metal with blue enamel detailing, featuring the official ship’s badge depicting the Greek hero Theseus slaying the Minotaur, surmounted by a naval crown. A scroll below reads H.M.S. Theseus.

Historical Note:
The name HMS Theseus was borne by several ships of the Royal Navy, but this badge design is most closely associated with the Colossus-class light aircraft carrier HMS Theseus (R64), launched in 1944 and commissioned in 1946. She served as part of the British Pacific Fleet during the final stages of WWII and later saw extensive service in the Korean War (1950–53). Operating Seafires, Fireflies, and later Sea Furies, she provided close air support and combat air patrols in one of the first major post-war conflicts.

Sweetheart brooches of this type were widely worn in the mid-20th century, often purchased from ship canteens or naval outfitters, and now serve as poignant reminders of naval heritage and family connections to the Fleet Air Arm and the wider Royal Navy.

*Condition*
The brooch retains strong colour to the enamel and good gilt finish overall, with light wear and minor loss to the gilding from age and use. The reverse shows expected patina and surface spotting, with the original pin fitting intact and sound. A well-preserved example with good detail. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
