Description

*British, WW2, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association Enamel Badge, by Gaunt London*

An original King’s Crown SSAFA enamel supporter’s badge by Gaunt, London—an emblem of interwar and WWII-era charitable support for the families of Britain’s armed forces.

A scarce original enamel supporter’s badge for the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA), measuring 2.5 cm wide x 3.4 cm tall. The circular design is surmounted by a King’s Crown, with a dark blue enamel border bearing the legend “SOLDIERS SAILORS AND AIRMENS FAMILIES ASSOCIATION”. The central device shows the distinctive SSAFA interlaced knot emblem in red enamel. Reverse with pin-back fitting and impressed maker’s cartouche, which looks to read GAUNT LONDON, but it is partially obscured by patina.

This red enamel centre variant is less common than the standard blue issue and is thought to have been reserved for particular branches or committee members, making it a more desirable example for collectors

Historical Note:
The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Families Association was established in 1885 to provide welfare and support to the dependants of serving men. With the creation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, the name expanded to include airmen. During the interwar period and throughout the Second World War, SSAFA played a crucial role in assisting families through allowances, housing, and welfare support. Badges such as this were produced by J.R. Gaunt & Son of London—one of the most prolific military and association badge makers of the 20th century—and were often sold or worn to show support for the charity’s work.

*Condition*
Front enamel remains bright with minor surface wear and light rubbing consistent with age. Reverse retains the original pin, though showing oxidation and patches of verdigris. Maker’s cartouche present but partially obscured; identifiable as GAUNT LONDON. Overall good and honest example with appealing patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
