*British or Colonial, Late 19th to Early 20th Century, Gentleman’s Swagger Stick with Horn Crook Handle and Brass Mounts*

A traditional gentleman’s swagger stick or light dress cane dating from the late Victorian to early 20th century period. The piece is fitted with a naturally formed horn crook handle mounted to a blackened wooden shaft with brass collar and matching brass ferrule.

The horn handle displays attractive natural colour variation with brown, amber, and darker tonal banding visible throughout, retaining a smooth hand-worn finish consistent with age and use. The slim hardwood shaft retains its original dark finish, giving the piece a classic understated military and sporting appearance. The brass collar and ferrule remain intact with age-related patina throughout.

Swagger sticks and short canes of this type were commonly carried by military officers, colonial officials, and gentlemen during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly as informal dress accessories associated with military, equestrian, and sporting circles.

History Note:
Swagger sticks became fashionable accessories amongst officers and gentlemen during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Horn-handled examples were especially favoured for their durability and naturally decorative appearance.

Horn handle retains good colour and shape with surface wear, small age-related marks, and natural texture visible throughout. The wooden shaft shows scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish wear consistent with age and handling. Brass mounts display tarnish, rubbing, and surface marks. Structurally sound overall.
