HMS Springer was a Royal Navy S-class submarine, part of the Third Group of that class, built by Cammell Laird and launched on 14 May 1945. It remains the only vessel of the Royal Navy to bear the name Springer.
Service History
With the end of World War II approaching, Springer saw limited action. In 1953, she participated in the Fleet Review to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation.
In 1958, Springer was sold to the Israeli Navy and renamed Tanin (Hebrew for “Crocodile”). During the Six-Day War, Tanin launched commandos to attack Alexandria’s port, then attempted to torpedo an Egyptian sloop but was heavily damaged by a depth charge counterattack. The submarine’s commander was awarded the Medal of Courage for his role in the Alexandria attack. Tanin received spare parts from her sister ship Rahav when it was retired in 1968. She was listed for disposal in 1972.
A Gal-class submarine Tanin served in the Israeli Navy from 1977 to 2002, followed by the delivery of a Dolphin-class submarine INS Tanin in May 2012.
