The bicorne, or bicorn (meaning “two-cornered”), is a historical hat style that became widely adopted in the 1790s as part of the uniform for European and American military and naval officers. It was commonly worn by generals and staff officers during the Napoleonic era and remained in use as a formal dress headdress into the 20th century. Worn in the side-to-side athwart style during the 1790s, the bicorne became normally seen fore-and-aft in most armies and navies from 1800.
