Description

*British, Victorian, 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officer’s Dress Sword, Scabbard & Sword Knot, by Gillott & Hasell, London*

A good Victorian Royal Navy Officer’s Dress Sword, conforming to the 1827 Pattern, retaining its original brass hilt, etched steel blade, leather and brass-mounted scabbard, and naval dress sword knot.

The gilt brass hilt is of regulation form, featuring the crowned fouled-anchor device within an oval cartouche to the guard, with characteristic scrolling decoration and a lion’s-head pommel. The sharkskin grip remains intact with its twisted wire binding, and the folding guard is present and functional. The overall form displays the elegant proportions associated with Victorian naval officer private-purchase swords.

The straight single-edged blade is regulation etched and polished, decorated with differing panels to each side. One face carries the Royal Arms/crest within foliate scrollwork, while the reverse displays a crowned fouled anchor — both executed in the typical acid-etched Victorian style. The crowns used within the blade decoration and on the guard are of the broad Victorian imperial pattern, consistent with 19th-century manufacture. The ricasso is signed to Gillott & Hasell, New Burlington Street, London, a respected naval outfitter and sword cutler known for supplying officers’ dress equipment during the Victorian period.

The sword is housed in its original leather scabbard with gilt brass throat, middle mount and chape, each decorated with stylised motifs and fitted with suspension rings. The accompanying naval sword knot remains attached, completing the set.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 80 cm. Overall length: 94 cm.

Historical Note:
The 1827 Pattern Royal Navy officer’s sword became the defining naval dress weapon of the 19th century, replacing earlier cutlass-influenced forms with a lighter, elegant weapon intended primarily for ceremonial and duty wear. While still capable of use as a fighting sword, its primary role by the Victorian period had become one of status and regulation uniform.

Victorian examples such as this show the transition toward refined etched steel blades and elaborate decorative hilts, reflecting the growing prestige of naval officer dress during the height of Britain’s maritime power.

Gillott & Hasell operated from London addresses including The Strand and New Burlington Street, and are recorded as military outfitters, tailors and sword cutlers supplying high-grade naval and military officers’ equipment. Like many Victorian outfitters, they frequently retailed swords produced by specialist blade makers while supplying the finished regulation weapon under their own name. Their swords are encountered less frequently than Wilkinson examples but are well regarded among collectors for their quality and presentation.

*Condition*
Overall, a good and honest Victorian example showing expected age and service-related wear. The blade remains bright with clear etched decoration, retaining good definition to the crowned fouled anchor and foliate scrolls, with only light surface spotting and minor age marks visible. The gilt brass hilt shows natural toning and some small areas of verdigris within recessed detail, consistent with age, while the sharkskin grip and wire binding remain intact and secure. The folding guard functions correctly. The brass-mounted leather scabbard displays typical period wear, with surface scuffing, ageing and some dryness to the leather, and the brass mounts showing matching age patina; the fittings are slightly loose,  but remain complete with suspension rings present. The naval dress sword knot survives with the sword, showing expected wear and handling commensurate with age, and remains a pleasing and appropriate accompaniment to the piece. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
