Description

*British, WW1, Royal Marine Artillery Sweetheart Brooch, Celluloid*

A scarce First World War sweetheart brooch for the Royal Marine Artillery, measuring 2.8 cm x 3.8 cm. Constructed from celluloid over a card base with a printed red “RMA” monogram and crowned globe-and-lion device of the Corps. The reverse is printed Royal Marine Artillery. and retains its original steel pin-back fitting.

Historical Note:
The Royal Marine Artillery (RMA) was formed in 1804 and served with distinction until its amalgamation with the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1923 to form the modern Royal Marines. During the First World War, RMA units manned heavy guns both ashore and afloat, including the massive 15-inch howitzers deployed on the Western Front. Sweetheart brooches such as this were widely worn by wives, mothers, and sweethearts at home to show pride and solidarity with loved ones serving abroad. Produced cheaply in celluloid and tin, they were also sold at fundraising events to support the war effort.

*Condition*
The brooch shows age-related toning and light surface wear consistent with age. Some darkening and minor marks to the celluloid face, and rust to the steel pin. The fastening is intact and functional. A small split to the celluloid is visible at the edge (see final photograph). Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
