Description

*British, WW2 Era, 2nd Special Air Service (S.A.S.) Embroidered Shoulder Title – Rare Numbered Type*

Rare WWII-era embroidered shoulder title for the 2nd Special Air Service, measuring approximately 9.5cm x 2.4cm. The title is worked in faded light thread on a curved cloth backing, reading “2nd S.A.S.”. The reverse retains distinct old paper or hessian backing residue, along with stitching remains and clear evidence of having been removed from a uniform garment.

This is the desirable numbered style associated with the early wartime SAS period, before later simplified or unnumbered titles became standard. The 2nd SAS was formed in 1943 and served in the Mediterranean and European theatres, taking part in special operations behind enemy lines in Italy, France and north-west Europe.

Titles of this type were typically worn on battledress and service dress uniforms, with numbered examples such as “2nd S.A.S.” being particularly sought after by collectors due to their shorter wartime usage before regimental numbers were discontinued in late 1944 / early 1945.

*Condition*
Worn, removed-from-uniform condition. The cloth is faded, frayed and misshapen at the edges, with loose threads, age staining and visible stitch remains. The reverse shows notable old paper or hessian residue from former mounting or original backing. The embroidery remains legible and displays well. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
