HMS Saracen, a third-batch S-class submarine commissioned in 1942, had an active World War II career. On her first patrol in the North Sea, she sank the German U-boat U-335. Later, assigned to the Mediterranean’s 10th Submarine Flotilla in Malta, she conducted three patrols—including sinking an Italian submarine—before transferring to the 8th Submarine Flotilla in Algiers, where she completed six more patrols, sinking seven enemy ships (totalling 16,039 GRT) and landing agents in Corsica and Sardinia.
During her 13th patrol, heavy depth charge attacks from Italian corvettes caused severe hull damage, forcing her to surface and ultimately be scuttled. Forty-six of her 48 crew were rescued. Her wreck was discovered off Corsica in 2015, marking the dramatic end to her distinguished service.
