*British, WW2, Mentioned in Despatches Oak Leaf Device on 1939–45 War Medal Ribbon*
A British Second World War Mentioned in Despatches (MID) emblem, consisting of a bronze oak leaf device mounted on a ribbon of the 1939–1945 War Medal. The small bronze oak leaf with acorn is attached to the ribbon with a pin fitting to the reverse, representing the authorised emblem worn by recipients who had been officially mentioned in a commander’s report for gallant or distinguished service in the field.
The ribbon displays the characteristic colours of the 1939–45 War Medal: a broad red field with dark blue edges and a central white stripe with a narrow red centre. During the Second World War, when a serviceman was mentioned in despatches, the bronze oak leaf was worn on the ribbon of the appropriate campaign medal. If no other campaign medal had been awarded, it was worn on the ribbon of the 1939–45 War Medal, as seen here.
This example appears to be mounted on a small card backing, likely originating from a ribbon bar or display mount.
History Note:
A Mention in Despatches was an official recognition for gallantry or distinguished service in operational conditions, reported by a commanding officer and published in the London Gazette. The practice dates back to the 19th century but was widely used during both World Wars.
Recipients of the honour were entitled to wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon of the relevant campaign medal. Thousands of British and Commonwealth servicemen received this distinction during the Second World War for acts of bravery, leadership, or meritorious service that warranted official recognition.
*Condition*
Good overall condition. The ribbon retains strong colour with minimal fading. The bronze oak leaf device shows typical age patina. The reverse pin fitting is present and intact. No medal. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
