Description

*British, WW2, Police Mk II Brodie Helmet by Rubery Owen & Co. with 1941 TTC Liner*

An original British Second World War Police Home Front Mk II steel helmet, retaining its wartime black finish together with large white stencilled “POLICE” markings to the front. A classic Blitz-era Home Front example, produced using a military-grade Mk II shell and adapted for police and civil defence service during the height of the war.

The helmet retains its original textured black overpaint with honest service wear and age throughout. The front POLICE stencil remains bold and highly displayable, showing expected age-related wear and patination. The shell retains its original web chinstrap fittings and a complete wartime liner assembly.

The interior liner is clearly stamped “7 / TTC / N / 1941,” identifying manufacture by the Teddy Toy Company Ltd of Dagenham, one of the civilian wartime contractors producing Mk II helmet liners. The size “7” corresponds to approximately 57 cm, while “N” denotes a wartime inspection or production batch code. Each of the red liner support bands is additionally pencil-marked “SB,” likely an internal assembly or inspection marking applied during manufacture.

The steel shell bears a faint but visible wartime manufacturer’s mark consistent with “RO&CO” for Rubery Owen & Co. Ltd, positioned beside the chinstrap lug on the inner upward slope where the brim rolls into the crown — a well-documented placement characteristic of Rubery Owen production. Along the rear rim seam are a series of circular “OOOO” batch or heat-lot symbols stamped directly beside the rim join, used during wartime steel production and factory quality-control processes.

History Note:
During the Second World War, British police forces formed a vital part of the Home Front defence system, serving throughout the Blitz in air raid response, blackout enforcement, rescue coordination, and civil defence operations. Police helmets such as this were factory-painted in dark blue-black and prominently stencilled for rapid identification during bombing raids and emergency duties. Many were produced using the same ballistic-grade shells issued to the British Army, reflecting the close wartime integration of military and civilian defence manufacturing.

*Condition*
A very honest wartime example showing genuine period wear throughout. The shell retains the majority of its original black finish and POLICE stencil with scattered scratches, edge rubbing, paint loss, and age-related surface marking. The liner remains substantially intact but shows expected age hardening, cracking, and wear to the pads. Chinstrap and fittings remain present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

A highly evocative and displayable original WWII British Police Brodie helmet, retaining its 1941-dated liner, wartime factory markings, and strong Home Front character.
