Description

*British, WW2, RAF Air Gunner (AG) Brevet Wing, Sweetheart Brooch, Sterling Silver & Enamel*

A finely made WWII Royal Air Force Air Gunner (AG) sweetheart brooch, measuring 5cm wide by 1.5cm tall. The brooch features a detailed outstretched wing in sterling silver, paired with a laurel wreath enclosing pale blue enamel “AG” initials. The reverse is clearly stamped “STERLING SILV”, confirming silver manufacture. This is a high-quality example, made for private purchase and gifted to loved ones as a token of pride and service during the war.

Historical Note:
The Air Gunner brevet was introduced in December 1939 for RAF bomber crew members responsible for manning defensive guns. With heavy casualties among air gunners during the Battle of Britain and Bomber Command campaigns, these wings became a poignant symbol of service and sacrifice. Sweetheart brooches were not official issue, but were purchased from jewellers and military outfitters, often near RAF stations, and given to wives, mothers, and sweethearts as keepsakes.

The use of sterling silver and enamel points to this being a higher-end wartime piece, likely produced in Britain or Canada between 1940–44. It combines both quality materials and emotive wartime association.

*Condition*
The brooch remains in good, original condition. The front retains crisp detailing to the feathered wing and laurel wreath, with enamel to the “AG” letters intact and bright. The reverse shows age-related tarnish and surface spotting consistent with sterling silver, with the “STERLING SILV” stamp clear. The pin fitting is present and functional, with natural oxidation to the metal. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
