Description

*British, WW2, RAF Pilot's Wings, Sweetheart Brooch, Gilt Brass, Bar Style*

A charming WWII RAF gilt sweetheart brooch with full pilot’s wings and crown, a true memento of wartime love and service.

A Second World War period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, fashioned in gilt brass and mounted on a horizontal bar. The centre displays the classic RAF pilot’s wings surmounted by a King’s Crown, with traces of red enamel visible to the crown and darkened lettering "RAF" to the central roundel. The winged device measures 4.3 cm, mounted on a 5.3 cm bar x 1.8 cm high.

Historical Note
Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased tokens, often given by airmen to wives, fiancées, or girlfriends as a symbol of affection and pride in service. Produced in large numbers during the war, they were made in a variety of metals from base gilt brass to silver and enamel examples. This style, depicting full RAF wings on a bar mount, was a popular design in the 1940s, worn on lapels, blouses, or coats as a visible connection to loved ones serving with the Royal Air Force.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish, with expected wear and surface rubbing from age. Traces of red enamel remain to the crown, and the pin and clasp are intact and functional. The bar itself shows a slight bend but remains structurally sound. Some small patches of verdigris are visible, consistent with age and material. Overall, a good wartime example with honest patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
