Description

*British, WWI & WWII, Royal Navy Group of Six Medals to Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist George Dudley Bear, HMS Falmouth & HMS Repulse — Jutland Veteran*

A highly desirable, fully documented group of six medals awarded to J.3647 Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist George Dudley Bear, Royal Navy. Born in Gillingham, Kent on 12 March 1893, Bear joined the service as a Boy Telegraphist in February 1909 and served through both World Wars.

He saw action aboard HMS Falmouth at the pivotal Battle of Jutland in 1916 and is also recorded aboard HMS Repulse, with his WWI trio officially issued to that ship. He rose to Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist, illustrating a steady and distinguished career in naval communications.

He was later awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 3 June 1926, while serving on HMS Colombo. His service record further shows peacetime postings through the interwar period and involvement during WWII.

Medal entitlement comprises:
1914–15 Star, impressed J.3647 G.D. BEAR. L. TEL. R.N.
British War Medal, impressed J.3647 G.D. BEAR. CH. P.O. TEL. R.N.
Victory Medal, impressed J.3647 G.D. BEAR. CH. P.O. TEL. R.N.

1939–45 Star, unnamed as issued.
War Medal 1939–45, unnamed as issued.
Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (GV), impressed J.3647 G.D. BEAR. CH. P.O. TEL. H.M.S. COLOMBO.

Historical Note:
HMS Falmouth played a significant role at Jutland before being torpedoed and sunk later in 1916. Bear’s telegraphist role placed him at the heart of fleet communications during this major naval battle. His continued service on notable ships like HMS Repulse and HMS Colombo demonstrates a distinguished career bridging both world wars and key peacetime postings.

*Condition*
All medals are swing-mounted on original worn ribbons, with consistent fraying indicative of long wear. Naming remains crisp and legible on all officially impressed medals; no sign of re-naming or tampering. The Long Service & Good Conduct Medal is particularly well-preserved with deeply struck ship and rank details. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Provenance:
Accompanied by photocopied service record sheet confirming ship postings, ranks, and award details.

A superbly complete and characterful medal group to a long-serving Royal Navy senior rating, Jutland veteran, and WWII participant. Rare to find such breadth of service so well documented and presented.
