Description

*British, WWII, RAF Air Gunner (AG) Sweetheart Brooch, Silver & Blue Enamel*

A fine original WWII Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, crafted in silver-coloured metal with blue enamel detail. The brooch depicts the Air Gunner brevet, with the letters “AG” within a laurel-wreath circle and a single outstretched wing, representing the trade badge issued to qualified RAF Air Gunners from 1939 onwards. Measuring 4.6cm wide by 1.1cm high, the brooch is mounted on a slender bar with rear clasp fastening.

Sweetheart brooches of this type were purchased privately and given by RAF servicemen to wives, fiancées, mothers or sweethearts during wartime as a token of affection and pride in service.

Historical Note:
The Air Gunner brevet was introduced in December 1939 as the RAF expanded its bomber force at the outbreak of WWII. Air Gunners were responsible for defending aircraft from enemy fighters, manning turrets such as those fitted to Wellingtons, Halifaxes, Lancasters and Sunderlands. Their role was vital yet dangerous, with high casualty rates across Bomber Command.

Sweetheart brooches became highly popular during WWII, often purchased from service canteens or jewellers near RAF stations. They were worn on civilian clothing at home, symbolising a direct connection to loved ones serving in the war.

*Condition*
The brooch remains in fair, original condition, showing signs of age and use. The blue enamel retains much of its vibrancy, though some small surface wear and tarnish are present, particularly on the reverse. Although unmarked, the brooch shows tarnishing and patina entirely consistent with silver, suggesting it is likely silver rather than plated base metal. The clasp mechanism is intact and functional. Overall, a genuine and evocative wartime piece of RAF home-front jewellery. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
