WWII RAF Sweetheart Brooch, paste-set wings with King’s Crown, original period example with characterful patina.
A WWII period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, measuring 4.2 cm wide by 1 cm tall. The brooch is fashioned in the form of outstretched RAF wings surmounted by a King’s Crown, with the central RAF monogram in relief. The piece is set with numerous paste stones to the wings, with traces of red enamel remaining to the crown. Reverse fitted with its original pin and catch fastening.
Historical Note
Sweetheart brooches were popular keepsakes during both World Wars, purchased privately by servicemen or gifted to their loved ones at home. They were worn proudly by wives, fiancées, mothers, and girlfriends as symbols of connection and loyalty. The use of inexpensive base metals, rhinestones, and enamel meant these pieces were widely affordable in wartime Britain, while their design often mirrored official insignia. This example, with its jewelled wings and crown, reflects the pride and sentiment attached to RAF service during WWII.
*Condition*
The brooch shows age-related wear with loss of enamel to the crown and many of the paste stones missing or dulled. Tarnishing and patina throughout. The original pin and catch remain intact and functional, with some oxidation visible to the fittings. A characterful and evocative original sweetheart piece retaining much of its period charm.
