Description

*British, WWII, RAF Sweetheart Brooch – Wishbone Design, Cold Enamel Detail*

A charming Second World War period RAF sweetheart brooch, finely cast in white metal and designed in the popular "wishbone" style. The centre displays the RAF monogram with outstretched wings and the King’s Crown above, finished with traces of original cold enamel paint in pale blue and red. The wishbone motif, associated with good luck, was a fashionable design in sweetheart jewellery of the 1930s–40s, symbolising the safe return of loved ones from service. Brooch pin fitting to reverse. Measures 4cm wide by 1.8cm tall.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased keepsakes given by servicemen to wives, fiancées, mothers or sisters as tokens of affection and connection during wartime. The wishbone design combined sentiment, luck and patriotic symbolism. RAF examples of this type were widely worn throughout the Second World War, particularly during the Battle of Britain and Bomber Command campaigns.

*Condition*
Good overall condition for age, with expected light surface wear and oxidation to the reverse. Traces of original cold enamel remain to the crown and RAF lettering, though with some losses. Pin clasp intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
