Description

*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Caledonia / M.T.E. (Mechanician Training Establishment), Gilt and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch*

A fine WWII Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Caledonia / M.T.E. (Mechanician Training Establishment), measuring approximately 4.6cm x 2.4cm. The gilt and enamel badge is mounted to a horizontal bar brooch fitting. The central crest displays the white saltire of St Andrew, dividing four blue panels with thistle and torch motifs, all framed by a gilt border and surmounted by a Naval Crown. Below, in blue enamel, are the letters “M.T.E.”. Reverse with simple pin and catch fitting.

Historical Note:
HMS Caledonia was established in 1937 as a Royal Navy shore base at Rosyth Dockyard, Fife, Scotland, created to train artificer apprentices and mechanicians. Its function as the Mechanician Training Establishment (M.T.E.) made it one of the most important centres for the development of naval engineering and mechanical expertise.

During the Second World War (1939–1945), the base played a vital role in producing trained engineering personnel for the fleet, at a time when the demand for skilled mechanics and artificers was greater than ever. The badge, with its St Andrew’s Cross and thistles, reflected the Scottish setting of Rosyth, while the naval crown symbolised Royal Navy authority.

Sweetheart brooches such as this, made in gilt metal and enamel, were privately purchased during the war by serving sailors and given to wives, mothers, or sweethearts as a symbol of pride and connection. This example, marked “M.T.E.,” is directly tied to HMS Caledonia’s wartime training role.

HMS Caledonia continued its role after the war and remained a key Royal Navy training establishment for artificers and mechanicians until the 1980s. The site later became MOD Caledonia, retaining its naval links, and in 2023 was recommissioned once again into active naval service.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish, with bright enamel showing only light age-related wear. The reverse has expected patina and some oxidation to the clasp, but the fastening remains intact. Overall, a well-preserved WWII sweetheart brooch linked to HMS Caledonia’s Mechanician Training Establishment. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
