Description

*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Cavendish Sweetheart Brooch, Gilt & Enamel*

A fine WWII-period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Cavendish, measuring 3.9cm in diameter. The brooch is designed as a gilt ship’s wheel, mounted with the ship’s badge at centre: a serpent swallowing its own tail (the ouroboros), in gilt against a blue enamel field, beneath a Naval Crown. The enamel scroll is inscribed “H.M.S. Cavendish.” Fitted with a horizontal pin to the reverse.

Historical Note:
HMS Cavendish was a C-class light cruiser launched in 1916 and named after the Elizabethan navigator Sir Thomas Cavendish. Converted into the aircraft carrier HMS Vindictive in 1918, she served during and after WWI before being scrapped in the late 1920s. The name continued in service with a WWII training establishment, HMS Cavendish, part of the network of shore bases supporting the wartime Royal Navy. Sweetheart brooches such as this were privately purchased items, presented by sailors to wives, fiancées, and loved ones as a token of affection and pride in naval service.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish with some rubbing and age toning to the high points. The blue enamel remains largely intact with only minor surface wear and light scratches. The reverse shows expected tarnishing and oxidation to the pin fitting, which remains functional. Overall, a good and presentable original example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
