Description

*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Sharpshooter Sweetheart Gilt & Enamel Bar Brooch*

A gilt and enamel sweetheart brooch, 4.9cm x 2.6cm, formed as a horizontal bar carrying the ship’s badge of HMS Sharpshooter: a naval crown above a green diamond with bow and arrow, and a blue enamel title scroll “SHARPSHOOTER.” Plain gilt reverse.

Historical Note:
HMS Sharpshooter was a Halcyon-class minesweeper launched in 1936. She saw extensive service during the Second World War, beginning with minesweeping duties in British coastal waters. In 1940 she was part of the evacuation effort at Dunkirk, where the Halcyon-class ships were heavily engaged under fire while clearing channels and rescuing stranded troops. She later operated on Atlantic and Arctic convoy duties, providing both minesweeping and escort support in hazardous conditions. Sharpshooter earned a distinguished service record, being present at Dunkirk, in the North Sea, and on Russian convoy escort operations, and she survived the war to be converted to a survey vessel in 1953.

Sweetheart brooches such as this were privately purchased and worn by the wives, fiancées, or family of serving sailors. They closely mirrored the official ship’s badge approved by the Admiralty in 1936, making them an intimate link between the home front and a vessel’s service life.

*Condition*
Good, presentable condition overall. Much original gilt survives with honest rubbing to high points; the green and blue enamels remain intact with light wear and some speckling to the green field. Reverse with age spotting to the gilt. Bar fitting complete and sound. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
