*British, WWII, Supplementary Fire Party (SFP) Armband – Civil Defence / Home Front Fire Guard Precursor*

A scarce and original Second World War British Supplementary Fire Party (SFP) armband, issued for civilian Home Front fire-fighting duties during the Blitz period, circa 1940–1941. Constructed in grey-blue drill cloth with large red painted or stencilled “SFP” lettering to the front, this example is the classic emergency-issue style associated with local volunteer fire-watching and incendiary bomb response teams.

Supplementary Fire Parties were formed during the height of the German bombing campaign to provide rapid local response to incendiary bombs and small fires before they could spread. Volunteers—often ordinary civilians—used simple equipment such as stirrup pumps, buckets, sand, and ladders to combat outbreaks caused by Luftwaffe raids. These parties were especially vital during the Blitz of 1940–41.

In 1941, many SFP units were reorganised into the wider Fire Guard system, and surviving armbands were often modified by sewing “FIRE GUARD” tabs over the original markings. Because of this, untouched original SFP-marked armbands are considerably scarcer and are increasingly sought after by collectors of British Home Front and Civil Defence memorabilia.

This example retains strong red lettering to the front, with visible reverse shadowing from the applied paint and honest wartime construction throughout. A very evocative piece of British civilian wartime history from one of the lesser-seen branches of Home Front service.

Approx. Measurements – Length flat: approx. 48 cm. Width: approx. 8.5 cm.
