Description

*Bulgarian, Cold War Era (1987), Bulgarian People’s Army (БНА) Officer’s Wool Greatcoat (Shinel), Lieutenant Rank, Kalofer Manufacture, Extra Large*

A substantial and authentic Cold War-era Bulgarian People’s Army officer’s wool greatcoat (шинел / shinel pattern), manufactured in 1987 and retaining its original rank insignia and the clear Ministry of Defence and factory label remain intact, confirming late Cold War Bulgarian People's Army production. These long heavy overcoats formed part of the standard winter uniform of the Bulgarian armed forces during the late communist period and closely followed the traditional Soviet military greatcoat design adopted across Warsaw Pact armies.

The coat is constructed from thick grey wool designed for harsh winter conditions and features the characteristic full-length single-breasted front secured by six original plastic buttons, each moulded with the Bulgarian military star emblem. Two large external pockets are positioned at the hips, while the rear retains its original half-belt with matching star buttons.

The shoulder boards are piped in red and fitted with a single gilt star on each board, denoting a junior officer rank, most commonly equivalent to Lieutenant within the Bulgarian People’s Army. Matching red piped collar tabs are present, consistent with officer uniforms of the period.

Internally the coat retains its quilted lining and original factory labels. The upper stamp “МО” (Ministerstvo na Obranata – Ministry of Defence) confirms official Bulgarian military issue. A red ink stamp dated 1987 indicates the year of manufacture or acceptance into service. The marking “VI Б” appears on the label and likely represents a factory production or batch designation used by the Bulgarian military textile system. The lower label references the textile factory at Kalofer, one of the state producers of Bulgarian military uniforms during the Cold War period.

The overall design follows the classic Eastern European “shinel” pattern: extremely long cut for warmth, heavy wool construction, and a simple utilitarian layout intended for winter field use by officers.

A genuine Cold War uniform piece that displays well and represents the final generation of communist-era Bulgarian military issue clothing.

Approx Measurements: Shoulder width: 58 cm; Overall length (collar to hem): 132.5 cm; Adjustable Sleeves

Historical Note:
The Bulgarian People's Army (Balgarska Narodna Armiya) served as the armed forces of the People's Republic of Bulgaria from 1946 until the end of communist rule in 1990. As a member of the Warsaw Pact, Bulgarian uniforms and equipment followed Soviet military standards closely, including the adoption of the traditional long wool shinel overcoat used across much of Eastern Europe.

By the 1980s these coats were still standard winter issue for officers and soldiers alike, valued for their durability and insulation during cold Balkan winters. Following the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact many examples entered the surplus market, though officer-marked coats with intact insignia remain more desirable to collectors.

*Condition*
The coat remains in good vintage condition overall with honest service wear consistent with age and use. The wool exterior shows typical light pilling and handling marks but remains structurally sound. All six front buttons remain present. The shoulder boards and collar tabs remain attached and intact. The rear half-belt is present with its original buttons. The interior lining shows normal wear but remains complete with factory labels visible. The lower skirt edge displays a raw, unhemmed finish, which is commonly encountered on Bulgarian and other Warsaw Pact greatcoats. These coats were often issued deliberately long and then shortened to the wearer by unit tailors or the soldier, resulting in examples where the lower edge remains simply cut rather than formally hemmed. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
