The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice – Awarded by the Vatican – Joannes Paulus II PP medal (1978-2005 version)
The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Latin for “For the Church and the Pope”) medal, also known as the “Cross of Honour,” is a distinguished award of the Roman Catholic Church. Instituted by Pope Leo XIII on July 17, 1888, to commemorate his Golden Jubilee, it was initially conferred upon individuals who contributed to the success of the Jubilee and Vatican Exposition. This medal holds the highest honor that the Papacy bestows upon the laity. The current iteration is exclusively awarded in gold.
The medal’s obverse features the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, with the inscription “Pro Ecclesia” (For Church) on the left arm of the cross and “Et Pontifice” (and Pope) on the right arm. The signature of Ernesto Manfrini, the renowned sculptor, appears in small letters in the lower right corner of the medal.
