~ Chinese Nephrite Jade Pendant Of A Goddess ~
A small standing jade figure pendant carved in a pale yellow-cream nephrite with attractive russet-brown surface markings. The figure depicts a stylised standing deity or ancestor form, wearing an elaborate winged or horned headdress carved in openwork, with arms held to the chest and a long, tapering robe-form lower body decorated with incised double-line scroll and cloud motifs. The piece has two small drilled perforations through the body, likely intended for stringing or suspension, along with a single perforation through the headdress.
The form, the flattened facial treatment, the splayed headdress, and the incised archaic scrollwork are all drawn from prototypes associated with Eastern Zhou and Warring States period jade figures of the 1st millennium BC. This style of figure has been continuously reproduced by Chinese carvers from at least the Qing dynasty through to the present day, and remains a popular decorative form. This example is offered as a reproduction or decorative piece carved in the archaic style, rather than as an antique or ancient jade; no scientific testing or provenance is available to support an earlier date, and the russet colouration, while attractive, is a common feature deliberately replicated in modern carving and cannot on its own be taken as evidence of age.
~ Dimensions ~
The pendant has a height of 7.5 cm (3 inches) and a width of 3.2 cm (1 ¼ inches).
It weighs 33 g.
~ Condition ~
The piece is in very nice condition with no damage.
