Description

~ Chinese Qing Dynasty Nephrite Jade Pair Of Tortoises ~

A charming and well-matched pair of hand-carved nephrite jade tortoises, each modelled in the round in a compact resting pose with the head extended forward and slightly upturned, the domed carapace incised with a detailed hexagonal shell pattern throughout, and four stubby rounded limbs tucked beneath the body. The heads of each figure are naturalistically rendered with small incised eyes and a pronounced snout, while the underside of each tortoise reveals a flat plastron, cleanly finished, with four rounded limbs clearly defined. The two figures are highly consistent in scale, form, and stone quality, suggesting they were carved as a matched pair from a single or closely related piece of stone. The nephrite is a warm yellowish-grey or buff tone with areas of translucency and brown-amber veining running through both pieces, giving them a pleasingly antiqued, honey-toned appearance. Both figures display a good overall polish with the characteristic waxy lustre of worked nephrite.

Historical Context
The tortoise, known in Chinese as gui, is one of the four sacred creatures of Chinese cosmology and a potent symbol of longevity, stability, and good fortune. Its domed shell was traditionally understood to represent the vault of heaven, and its flat underside the earth, making it a symbol of cosmic order in ancient Chinese thought. Tortoise carvings in jade appear from the Neolithic period onwards in China, and by the Qing dynasty (1644 to 1912) small jade tortoises were widely produced as auspicious desk objects, scholar's accessories, and personal talismans, often displayed in pairs to double the symbolic benefit and to signal marital harmony or propitious pairing. The warm buff or yellowish-grey nephrite of this pair, sometimes described as yellowish Hetian jade, was considered a reputable and auspicious stone colour in Qing period carving practice. Matching pairs of jade animals are considerably more desirable than single examples, as the concept of pairing carried deep symbolic resonance in Chinese culture, representing harmony, completeness, and balanced good fortune. The clean and consistent quality of the shell detail across both pieces speaks to a competent workshop with access to matched stone.

~ Dimensions ~

Each tortoise measures 4.5 cm (1 ¾ inches) by 4.5 cm (1 ¾ inches).
