~ Christopher Dresser Linthorpe Pottery Small Vase ~

A small Linthorpe pottery jug designed by Christopher Dresser.

The vase is of baluster form with a wide flared mouth and four handles.

The vase is in a mustard yellow glaze with a green glaze to the upper edge which runs down into the yellow.

The vase has no markings.

~ Dimensions ~

The vase has a diameter of 9.5cm (3 ¾ inches) and a height of 10.5cm (4 ¼ inches).

It weighs 258g.

~ Condition ~

There is some crazing to the glaze throughout and also some chipping of the glaze to the lower edge
though this is not really visible unless the vase is upended.

The vase has no damages and is in a very good condition as a whole.

The Linthorpe Art Pottery was launched in August 1879, in Linthorpe Village, Middlesbrough, Teesside. The
venture was the result of a meeting between landowner John Harrison and Dr. Christopher Dresser, an
orientalist, architect and peripatetic lecturer.

Dr. Dresser’s intention was to create pottery that should produce ware not previously attempted in England
or Europe and at the same time alleviate some of Middlesbrough’s unemployment.
