A very attractive and original East German Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) winter ushanka hat, dating to the Cold War period and manufactured for issue to the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic. This classic winter field cap features the correct grey wool field-cloth outer body with darker grey synthetic fur trim to the fold-down ear flaps and front band, together with the standard concealed ear flap fastening system allowing the flaps to be worn raised, tied over the crown, or lowered under the chin for severe winter conditions.

The rear retains the correct press-stud fittings, marked “LOSO,” a common East German military hardware maker, while the ear flaps are secured internally by the original elastic retaining band and button arrangement. The interior is lined in the correct khaki cotton lining and retains clear issue markings including “NVA,” confirming Nationale Volksarmee issue, size stamp “59,” and maker/production code “1856 G 5.” The size 59 corresponds to approximately a 59 cm head circumference.

History Note:
The code “1856” is associated with VEB Perfekt Berlin, one of the East German state-owned factories producing military headwear and uniform equipment for NVA issue. The letter code “G” is generally accepted as indicating 1981 production, placing this firmly within the later Cold War era. Ushankas of this type were standard winter issue across the East German armed forces, particularly for field units, guards, and personnel stationed in exposed winter conditions. Their practical design, distinctive silhouette, and unmistakable Warsaw Pact styling make them highly collectible today, especially with clear internal markings and complete original fittings.

Condition is very good overall, with strong clean fur trim, good shape to the body, and no major damage noted.
