It reads 1942 HMS Watchman C. Sinclair Eng(ineer).
Chain stitch is a sewing and embroidery technique in which a series of looped stitches form a chain-like pattern.
The embroidery is decorated with pyramids, the Egyptian sphinx and palm trees in silver and gold.
By chance, the board on the back of the frame is also special, being a 1940’s ‘James Walker & Co Dublin’ print, named ‘LEDAH AND THE SWAN’ (by the name of a 1928 famous poem by William Butler Yeats).
~ Dimensions ~
The glazed frame size is 66cm wide by 52cm tall (24 x 20.5 inches). It weighs 2.3Kg.
~ Condition ~
The embroidery is in good condition for it’s age. The orignal glazed wooden frame is worn in places.
