Description

*European, Early 19th Century, Pair of Fencing Swords with Solingen Blades & Ornate Brass Guards*

Approx Measurements - Blade length: approximately 84cm each, Overall length: approximately 102cm each

An elegant matched pair of early 19th-century fencing swords (practice foils), each fitted with square-section training blades stamped "SOLINGEN" on two sides, accompanied by a classic Solingen balance scales mark within a diamond, denoting production in the renowned German blade-making city known for its exceptional steelwork and rigorous quality control. These foils feature pierced and gilded brass shell guards of attractive openwork design, designed to offer hand protection while keeping weight light and balance responsive.

The hilts are finished with finely decorated brass pommels featuring floral and stylised acanthus motifs, and wire-bound leather grips that provide a firm and historically correct feel. The overall quality and detailing reflect the transition of fencing from martial training to refined sport during the early 1800s. Each blade terminates in an integral button for safe practice use, one additionally wrapped with a period cloth safety pad.

Historical note
By the early 19th century, fencing had evolved into a formalised European pastime and military discipline. The use of foils and practice swords reflected a focus on agility and precise thrusting techniques rather than cutting. Solingen blades were widely prized for their quality and reliability, making them a preferred choice among aristocratic fencing schools and military academies.

*Condition*
Both swords show age-related patina throughout. The blades exhibit dark surface oxidation and scattered pitting, though they remain structurally solid and true. The "SOLINGEN" stamp is clearly visible on one blade and partially visible on the other, both accompanied by decorative struck maker’s marks and inspection stamps. The pierced brass guards retain much of their original form and traces of gilding, though there is wear, edge losses, and oxidation consistent with age. the guard is slightly loose on one of the swords. The wire-wrapped leather grips are largely intact but show fraying and wear to the leather covering, as expected for period pieces. The pommels are well-defined, with minor softening to high points from handling. Of particular interest, the blade tips remain intact. One foil retains its period-style button tip; the other has an old, possibly original cloth safety button wrap, showing evidence of actual fencing use. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
