Description

~ Fine Framed Watercolour Of Major James Robert Gaussen D.S.O. 3rd Bengal Cavalry (Skinners Horse) ~

This beautiful unsigned water colour, dating to the early 20th century, is presented in its original frame, the cardboard mount and backing board were replaced by ourselves. It came from his descendants.

~ Lieutenant Colonel James Robert Gaussen CMG DSO ~

He was born on March 20, 1871., the son of David Gaussen of Broughton Hall, Lechlade.

He joined Hampshire Regiment in 1892. the Bengal Cavalry in 1894 and served China, 1900, including relief of Pekin (despatches, medal and clasp, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). He was a Captain in the 3rd Skinner’s Horse. Gaussen was also made a member of the American Order of the Dragon.

He was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the Kings birthday honours of 1916.

He also served with the South Wales Borderers, and was then attached to the 9th Lancers, Indian Army.

He led the the short lived 40th Cavalry Regiment in India which was formed 1918 and disbanded in 1921. It was involved in the third Anglo-Afghan war. He was awarded the Companionship of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) for the defence of the Gumbaz fort.

~ Condition ~

Please refer to the images for the condition. It is in excellent order.

~ Dimensions ~

The frame is 48 cm (19 inches) wide and 58 cm (22.75 inches) tall.
