Description

*Framed, Hand-coloured, "Birds-Eye View of Portsmouth", Drawn by H.W. Brewer c.1885*

A hand coloured reproduction of a scarce original wood engraving of Portsmouth Harbour by H.W. Brewer, Circa 1885. Measuring 35 x 95cm, the framed and glazed image spans 40.3cm x 101cm. Framed by Richard Martin, Gosport.

The scene brims with intricate details, capturing the bustling activity of the harbor. The Semaphore Tower in Portsmouth Dockyard commands the foreground, overlooking the railway extension, now defunct. HMS Victory graces the waters, reflecting its longstanding presence before its relocation to dry dock in 1922.

Across the harbor, the Camber at Old Portsmouth is encircled by ships, with Portsmouth Cathedral looming prominently. On the Gosport side, Holy Trinity Church and the graceful Clarence Square, which met an unfortunate fate in the 1960s, are clearly visible. Further afield, landmarks like Haslar Hospital and the Kicker Gill, erected in 1699 to aid navigation, add depth to the panoramic vista.

*Condition*
Excellent used condition. The frame is chipped on the corners. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
