Approximate Framed Dimensions: 43.9cm x 38.7cm, print excluding mount 28cm x 21.5cm

Turner, William Joseph Mallord (1775-1851) "Spithead", engraved by William Miller (1796-1882) around 1835.

Signed lower left and right "J.M.W. Turner, R.A. Pinx", "W. Miller Sculpt".

Hand coloured print. A boat crew retrieving an anchor. Inscribed in the centre. Taken from a painting in Turners Gallery which was titled 'Two of the Danish ships which are seized at Copenhagen entering Portsmouth Harbour' in 1808 and then retitled 'Boat's crew recovering an anchor" in 1809

William Miller (1796-1882)
Miller was born in Edinburgh from where his father sent him to London to learn engraving from George Cooke in 1819. According to Bryan’s Dictionary, ‘The great bulk of his work is after [J M W] Turner. [John] Ruskin speaks of him as the best of Turner’s engravers. In the last half of his life, he travelled a good deal, and also practised painting in water-colour.’ Miller was elected an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1862. Miller was responsible for all but a couple of the Scott series, and was perhaps the most successful engraver of Turner's watercolours. Indeed his efforts were greatly admired by the artist himself.
