~ George IV Silver Vinaigrette c1820’s ~
A lovely George IV silver vinaigrette dating to the 1820’s.
The piece is of rectangular form with engraved decoration both to the lid and base.
The lid has heavy decorative edging and a blank cartouche to the centre.
The hinged lid reveals a gilt pierced and engraved hinged grille. The inside of the lid and base also have a gilt finish.
The piece is hallmarked inside the lid for silver but the marks are rather worn and hard to read. The makers mark of ‘T&WS’ is just apparent. The mark
very much resembles that of ‘Thomas & William Simpson’ whose mark is seen on similar items in the 1820’s which seems a likely date for this piece.
~ Dimensions ~
The vinaigrette measures 3.7cm by 2.5cm with a depth of 1cm.
It weighs 17.4g.
~ Condition ~
There is a tiny split to the corner of the lid so the lid doesn’t shut quite tight. There is a little wear to the edges from use but otherwise the piece is in a
very nice condition for its age with minimal wear.
