The Universelle Selbstladepistole (USP), which translates to "universal self-loading pistol," was created by Heckler & Koch GmbH (H&K) in Germany as a successor to the P7 series of handguns. It made its official debut in January 1993 with the USP40 variant, and shortly after, the USP9 chambered for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge was introduced.
One of the notable characteristics of the USP is its innovative mechanical recoil reduction mechanism. This system includes an additional short spring positioned within the primary recoil spring at the breech end of the recoil spring assembly. Its primary purpose is to minimize wear on the pistol's internal components, but it also serves to reduce the peak recoil forces experienced by the shooter. Thanks to this design, featuring two springs, the system can adapt to various types of ammunition without requiring any manual adjustments.
