*German, Third Reich, Bronze Reiterabzeichen (Horseman’s Badge, 3rd Class), L. Chr. Lauer Manufacture*
An excellent original Third Reich Reiterabzeichen (Horseman’s Badge) in Bronze, 3rd Class, measuring 5.2 cm x 4.3 cm, manufactured by L. Chr. Lauer, Nürnberg–Berlin. Closely associated with the Nationalsozialistisches Reiterkorps (NSRK) and worn by both Wehrmacht and SS cavalrymen, this badge features a mounted rider within an oak-leaf wreath, with the letter “R” in a circular cartouche at the base. The reverse carries the maker’s name and the inscription “Gesetzlich Geschützt” (legally protected), together with its original pin, hinge, and catch intact and fully functional.
Historical Note
The German Horseman’s Badge was instituted on 9 April 1930 by the German National Federation for Breeding and Testing of Thoroughbreds and was awarded in three classes – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – for riding and equestrian skill. Bronze represented the entry level and was the most commonly awarded. After 1933, the badge was absorbed into the Nazi system and became the official sporting award of the Nationalsozialistisches Reiterkorps (NSRK), a paramilitary equestrian organisation under party control. Authorised for wear on both civilian and military uniforms, it became a visible symbol of horsemanship among Third Reich cavalry units, including Wehrmacht and SS formations.
This example, marked “Gesetzlich Geschützt”, is an early production piece. The use of this legal protection phrase predates the centralised licensing system of the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM), introduced in 1934. Later badges often carried RZM codes, while earlier examples such as this are especially desirable to collectors, representing the transition from Weimar-era equestrian traditions into the militarised culture of the Third Reich.
*Condition*
The badge retains a good portion of its original gilt finish, with expected high-point wear and natural patination across the surface. Some areas of verdigris are visible on the reverse, consistent with age. The maker’s marks are clear and sharp, and the hardware – hinge, pin, and catch – remains present, original, and fully working. No repairs are evident. A fine and fully authentic period example.
