*German, WW1, Postcard of a Group of Soldiers including Adolf Hitler in 1916*
Adolf Hitler was a soldier in WW1 – he is marked by an X on the postcard and the postcard dates him to 1916. By some accounts, Hitler was a brave soldier, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal, was wounded twice (in 1916 and 1918), and was awarded several medals. Other reports describe him differently “Adolf Hitler was labelled a “cowardly pig” by fellow First World War soldiers in his regiment,” reported the Telegraph 16th Sept 2010 reviewing ‘Hitler’s First War’, by Dr Thomas Weber. “The myth of Hitler as a brave soldier and the camaraderie of the trenches was used by the Nazi Party from the beginning in order to extend its appeal beyond the far Right,” Dr Weber said.“They went to great lengths to protect this idea but the reality was a gulf between the majority of soldiers and Hitler.”
The postcards writing is hard to read but roughly says:
“Dein Freund, war wieder 8 tage in osterreich bin aber wieder da Nichts interressantes Eingetroffen. Rufe vieleicht mal an” “Your friend was in Austria again for 8 days but I’m back. Nothing interesting arrived. Maybe call sometime”
