*German, WW2, Black German Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen), Solid Back*
This non-magnetic, stamped solid-back black badge features an embossed profile of a swastika, above an M35 pattern helmet, which is above two crossed broad swords. This then lies on a pebbled field and is surrounded by a laurel leaf and berry wreath which is tied together at the bottom with a bow tie. The original hinge, pin and catch are in good working order.
The German Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) of 1939 originated as a military honor first established on March 3, 1918, during World War I. In the interwar period, the Wound Badge was bestowed upon German armed forces members who participated in the Spanish Civil War from 1938 to 1939 and suffered combat-related injuries. From 1939 to 1945, the Wound Badge was utilized by the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, and SS, including civilians who sustained wounds from Allied bombings or hostile actions.
The Wound Badge was categorized into three grades: black, silver, and gold. The black badge, 3rd Class, was awarded to individuals wounded 1-2 times, the silver badge, 2nd Class, for 3-4 times, and the gold badge, 1st Class, was occasionally awarded posthumously or for more severe injuries sustained during hostilities.
