Description

*German, WW2, Black Wound Badge – Verwundetenabzeichen*

The German Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) of 1939 originated as a military honor first established on March 3, 1918, during World War I. In the interwar period, the Wound Badge was bestowed upon German armed forces members who participated in the Spanish Civil War from 1938 to 1939 and suffered combat-related injuries. From 1939 to 1945, the Wound Badge was utilized by the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, and SS, including civilians who sustained wounds from Allied bombings or hostile actions.

The Wound Badge was categorized into three grades: black, silver, and gold. The black badge, 3rd Class, was awarded to individuals wounded 1-2 times, the silver badge, 2nd Class, for 3-4 times, and the gold badge, 1st Class, was occasionally awarded posthumously or for more severe injuries sustained during hostilities.

This badge is constructed from a die-stamped tombak base, coated with black enamel paint and lacquer. The oval-shaped obverse features an embossed profile of a mobile swastika above an M35 pattern helmet, which is positioned above two crossed broad swords. This design rests on a pebbled field and is encircled by a laurel leaf and berry wreath, tied together at the bottom with a bow. The hollow-back reverse includes a soldered-on square wire catch, a soldered-on block hinge, and a round wire pin. All components are non-magnetic and remain in good working condition.
